The crown of thorns, intended as humiliation, becomes the visual centre of a work about sacrifice, kingship and extraordinary endurance.

Light falls gently across Christ while the surrounding darkness recedes, drawing attention to His expression and creating the stillness of a classical devotional painting. Restrained colour, deep shadow and warm highlights give the work an intimacy that rewards being viewed closely.

The irony at the heart of the biblical account is profound.
