MY SOUL THIRSTETH

Psalm 42:1–2

There is a thirst that water cannot satisfy.

My Soul Thirsteth draws upon one of the Psalms' most beautiful expressions of longing for God. Beside a flowing stream, a solitary traveller lifts his gaze towards heaven while, nearby, a stag bends to drink from the water.

The imagery comes directly from the opening words of Psalm 42 — the physical thirst of the deer becoming a metaphor for something deeper within us: the longing for the presence of God.

Set within a vast, sun-worn landscape, the figures are deliberately small against the wilderness around them. Pale limestone, distant blue-grey mountains and quiet water create a sense of stillness, while warm light falling across the traveller draws the eye towards the human heart of the work.

It is an image for those who seek, those who question, and those who have discovered that success, possessions and the noise of life cannot answer every hunger of the soul.

My Soul Thirsteth gives that longing a simple expression:

to thirst for God is already to begin seeking Him.

“As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God.”
Psalm 42:1–2
